Fern needs desperately right then to pull himself together.[break][break]

But doing so would also require him to be thinking straight, which he is definitely not. Shock and adrenaline have done their part to wear down his system. Numb the pain to background noise unless he turns wrong or bumps certain injuries against the rocky cavern wall he’s now using to hold himself up.[break][break]

It’s like there’s a layer of static swallowing up his brain. He thinks that maybe he called for backup in the aftermath of his confrontation with MATIAS SILPH . But now he can’t remember if he did or not.[break][break]

Maybe he called jayden cross . Maybe it was someone else. Maybe it was a friend. Maybe it was no one at all.[break][break]

Stupid Silph. No, stupid Fern for thinking he shouldn’t back off for once. He should have done what he excels in—getting away.[break][break]

At least then he probably wouldn’t be quite so addled and roughed up as he is now. Bloody mouthed with knees buckling under his weight to leave him sitting against the wall of rock. Eyes closed to will the tilt of the world away.[break][break]

Just for a moment. To catch his breath.

Footsteps reach their…ear. A hand slips to a pokeball on the ground beside them. But soon wariness is replaced by relief.[break][break]

“Theo. Sight for sore eyes,” they greet, grin splitting painfully across their face as it shoots a fresh wave of pain through their crooked nose.[break][break]

It’s far dimmer than the feral delirium he’d reacted with earlier, though.[break][break]

“You are not who I expected.” Dazed eyes settle on the hatenna as some of the ache and burn leeches away. Not that they expect it to do much. How much blood have they lost?[break][break]

A dark little laugh whistles from their lungs. “MATIAS SILPH happened.”

the small hatenna does what it can to slow the bleeding, to soothe the immense pain they must be feeling. it lets out soft coos as though it'd help.[break][break]

theo, on the other hand, works quickly to try and stop the bleeding. a bit of clean cloth is held to their ear, pressed down against the wound.[break][break]

"well, you're alive, which is good."[break][break]

Slowly, some of the pain begins to ebb, numbed by the hatenna’s work.

Fern hisses as pressure is put against their ear, and they flinch but try to remain a good patient. Or a decent one.[break][break]

Their head tips back to rest against the rocky wall they lean on.[break][break]

“Well I bit him so that’s a start.”[break][break]

Another low, delirious chuckle slips loose as they lift a limp arm in a lousy attempt at a flex.[break][break]

“Think I lack the firepower.” Fern’s gaze slides back over to Theo. “No lack of willingness, though.”

Fern sighs, forlorn despite the lack of any reprimand. “Maybe someday.”[break][break]

It’s probably no more than a fanciful pipe dream, though. They’re no more than a very persistent buzzing gnat. Still, it’s nice that Theo does not light into him for failing. He’s too tired to endure a lecture now.[break][break]

“Yeah, those earth spikes are no joke.” Fern lifts his hand, and waggles his fingers. They’re stiffer than he remembered them being. The open wound in the center of his palm, though, bleeds dark—red slipping down to coat his wrist and sleeve.[break][break]

“You, though? Fail? Pah, no way.” His vision spins. Something uncomfortable lurches in his stomach from the blood loss. Sill, he tries to grin at the tease.[break][break]

“That’s what we do. We survive.” But right now, that feels like a tall order.

They can trade war stories and battle scars later, Fern supposes. Right now, he only wants to take a quick snooze.[break][break]

The remark is halfheartedly waved off, but the slap makes him startle, pupils dilating as he tries to regain focus. “Ah.”[break][break]

His limbs feel like they’re made of cement. So when Theo suggests moving, the look he manages is incredulous.[break][break]

“How’m I supposed to do that?” Regardless of his protests, his hands push back against the wall of rock and he tries to awkwardly shuffle himself back up to his feet.[break][break]

Immediately teetering as his balance upends, Fern steadies himself by gripping one of Theo’s shoulders. “I do not feel good.” Pink mist swells nearby and he dazedly regards it. “Not more of that…”

“Kinda hard with a busted nose,” they wheeze back.[break][break]

Even if Theo is being understanding, there’s still a small part of Fern underneath the tangled mess of his mind that doesn’t want to seem weak in front of the underboss.[break][break]

So they take a step, and then another. Teeth grit despite the flares of pain it sends shooting up their jaw to the muscles of his face, and to the mangled remnants of his ear.[break][break]

He feels…off balance. Thrown by the lack of equilibrium between his ears. “How far..”[break][break]

He’s already dealt with the horrors in jayden cross’s mind in this mist. Fern isn’t sure he’s up to snuff for a repeat.
